Geneious Tutorials
Geneious Tutorials are an excellent interactive way to learn more of the
functionality on your own, or as a a teaching tool for
bioinformatics. Our tutorials have all been created using real data from real
research by real researchers, so your students do real bioinformatics analysis,
interpret the results and answer important questions. Download any one of the
tutorials below to begin the interactive learning process.
Basic Bioinformatics
Level: Basic
Within 2 hours you will know all the core elements of bioinformatics in
Geneious, and have experienced "doing it" for yourself. Covers basic techniques
in downloading, analysing and manipulating DNA/protein sequence data. Written
by Dr Michael Bunce, Murdoch University, Australia.
Microsatellites
Level: Basic
Learn how to use the Microsatellite plugin for Geneious to fit a ladder, call peaks, bin alleles and produce a table of genotypes.
Sequence Searching
Level: Basic
Learn how to use the Geneious Sequence Search function to find sequences by
similarity using BLAST and other programs. This tutorial doesn't contain any
questions. Written by Dr Shane Sturrock, Biomatters Ltd, New Zealand.
3D Structures
Level: Basic
Explore the controls in the Geneious 3D structure viewer and learn how to use
it to visualize active sites in a protein structure. This tutorial doesn't
contain any questions. Written by Dr Shane Sturrock, Biomatters Ltd, New
Zealand.
Manipulating Trees
Level: Basic
Learn about the parts of a phylogenetic tree and how to view and manipulate
trees with Geneious. Written by Dr Howard Ross, University of Auckland, New
Zealand.
Cloning
Level: Intermediate
Learn how to engineer a GFP fusion protein in Geneious. Along the way you will
find restriction sites, design primers for cloning, introduce a cut site using
PCR and clone an insert into a plasmid vector.
Plant Molecular Genetics
Level: Intermediate
Annotate plant DNA sequences using BLAST and multiple alignment, then learn how
to read a phylogenetic tree to explore genetic distance. Written by Dr Jack da
Silva, University of Adelaide, Australia.
Chromatographs
Level: Intermediate
Perform forensic DNA analysis on a sample to determine if it is bear bile. You
will assemble and edit chromatographs and use BLAST and phylogenetics to
identify the sample. Written by Dr Michael Bunce, Murdoch University,
Australia.
Advanced Chromatograms
Level: Advanced
In this tutorial you will take typical raw sequence data produced from a Sanger
sequencing run and learn how to edit and align chromatographs for downstream
analyses such as building a phylogenetic tree or calculating nucleotide diversity.
HIV Molecular Evolution
Level: Advanced
Use Geneious to investigate the evolutionary origins of human immunodeficiency
viruses (HIVs) using molecular phylogenetic tools. Written by Dr Jack da Silva,
University of Adelaide, Australia.
Pairwise Alignment
Level: Advanced
Develop the skills needed to align pairs of DNA and protein sequences with
Geneious using dotplots and alignment algorithms. Written by Dr Shane Sturrock,
Biomatters Ltd, New Zealand.
Learn how to create your own tutorials
This tutorial walks you through creating your own teaching material including all the examples you need. Written by Dr Shane
Sturrock, Biomatters Ltd, New Zealand.
