Scientific Innovation and Discovery

New Zealand has a strong background in scientific innovation and discovery. The current biotech industry offers world-class research to occur in a stable, cost-competitive and strategic part of the world. New Zealand has an enviable tradition of producing world-class scientists and health researchers, renown for scientific innovation and discovery on a global scale and collaborating internationally with many of the world's top institutes and companies.
Biotechnology and Information Technology were identified as two of the three top industries that New Zealand chose to focus funding, support and government initiative in 2001 going forward. Why? Because of New Zealand's commitment to advancing its economy and resources towards the most in-demand, profitable and best positioned industries on the world stage, Investing in New Zealand.
In New Zealand, research and development is 100% tax deductible with a political culture that encourages investment in innovative companies and technology. The New Zealand government puts 25% of its total research investment in biotechnology- much higher than any other member of the OECD.
To encourage private sector investments in the industry, the government also provides an R&D tax credit of 15% which is amongst the most generous in the OECD . The New Zealand dollar is well placed for overseas investors to get real value from investment. Additionally, there is no capital gains tax in New Zealand for offshore investors, making it easier for investors to participate in the ongoing commercialization of New Zealand's technology companies.
"Within New Zealand, just over 50% of the venture dollar invested in 2007 were directed to the biotech industry giving biotech companies a much larger slice of the venture pie than is typical in the US or Europe" (Source: Ernst & Young Global biotechnology Report 2008 – Beyond Borders)
Biomatters has been the recipient of nearly NZ$900,000 of non-dilutive, matched funding through government grants. This means that when Biomatters receives investment from shareholders, much of the investment is eligible for a dollar-for-dollar match through the New Zeland Trade and Enterprise grant funds.
